About this experience
Known as the "Whiskey Route," the 7-Day Machame Route is widely considered the most popular and scenic trekking trail on Mount Kilimanjaro. Ascending through the southwestern slopes, this route offers dramatic landscapes, traversing five distinct ecological zones—from lush tropical rainforest to alpine desert and glacier-capped arctic summit terrain. The 7-day itinerary features an optimal "climb high, sleep low" profile and includes an extra acclimatization day at Karanga Camp, significantly maximizing your body's altitude adaptation and summit success rate. Day-by-Day Itinerary: Day 1: Moshi/Arusha to Machame Gate (1,800m) – Machame Camp (2,835m) Activities: Morning pick-up from your hotel and drive to Machame Gate for park registration. Begin a 5 to 6-hour hike (11 km) ascending through a dense montane rainforest canopy filled with ancient trees, giant ferns, and wildlife like colobus monkeys. Reach Machame Camp by late afternoon for dinner and overnight. Accommodation: Machame Camp (All-weather high-altitude camping tents) Meals Included: Lunch & Dinner Day 2: Machame Camp (2,835m) to Shira 2 Camp (3,850m) Activities: Emerge from the rainforest canopy into open moorland and heather vegetation. Trek 4 to 6 hours (5 km) along a steep, rocky ridge onto the expansive Shira Plateau. Enjoy striking views of Kibo Peak and its western glaciers as you settle in at Shira 2 Camp. Accommodation: Shira 2 Camp (All-weather high-altitude camping tents) Meals Included: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner Day 3: Shira 2 Camp (3,850m) to Lava Tower (4,630m) – Barranco Camp (3,960m) Activities: Ascend into the stark alpine desert toward the volcanic Lava Tower (4,630m) for a hot lunch and crucial high-altitude acclimatization. Following the "climb high, sleep low" principle, descend 2 to 3 hours through the Barranco Valley surrounded by giant senecios to Barranco Camp. Accommodation: Barranco Camp (All-weather high-altitude camping tents) Meals Included: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner Day 4: Barranco Camp (3,960m) to Karanga Camp (4,035m) Activities: Begin the morning scrambling up the famous, non-technical Great Barranco Wall—a thrilling 1.5 to 2-hour rock scramble offering breathtaking valley views. Continue across volcanic ridges and valleys to Karanga Camp (4 to 5 hours, 5 km) for an afternoon of rest and acclimatization. Accommodation: Karanga Camp (All-weather high-altitude camping tents) Meals Included: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner Day 5: Karanga Camp (4,035m) to Barafu Camp (4,673m) Activities: Trek 3 to 4 hours (4 km) across the desolate alpine desert to Barafu Camp, completing the South Circuit. Arrive by early afternoon to rest, hydrate, receive a comprehensive summit briefing, and enjoy an early dinner before sleeping prior to the midnight summit push. Accommodation: Barafu Camp (All-weather high-altitude camping tents) Meals Included: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner Day 6: Summit Day – Barafu Camp (4,673m) to Uhuru Peak (5,895m) & Descent to Mweka Camp (3,100m) Activities: Wake at 11:30 PM for warm tea and biscuits. Begin the midnight summit push up steep scree slopes to Stella Point (5,756m) on the crater rim at sunrise. Continue 1 hour along the glacier rim to Uhuru Peak (5,895m)—the roof of Africa! After photos and celebration, descend back to Barafu Camp for rest and hot brunch, then continue down to Mweka Camp for the night. Accommodation: Mweka Camp (All-weather high-altitude camping tents) Meals Included: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner Day 7: Mweka Camp (3,100m) to Mweka Gate (1,640m) & Transfer to Moshi/Arusha Activities: Complete a steady 3 to 4-hour (10 km) descent through the tropical rainforest back to Mweka Gate. Collect your official TANAPA summit certificates (Gold for Uhuru Peak, Silver for Stella Point), celebrate with your guide and porter team, and transfer back to your hotel in Moshi or Arusha. Accommodation: Hotel in Moshi/Arusha (Pre/Post-trek lodging arranged separately) Meals Included: Breakfast & Lunch
