About this experience

The 6-Day Machame Route—traditionally nicknamed the "Whiskey Trail"—is a world-renowned, high-scenery camping ascent of Mount Kilimanjaro. Approaching the mountain from the southwest, the trail traverses diverse climatic zones: dense montane rainforest, heath and heather moorlands, high alpine desert, and the arctic crater rim. The 6-day itinerary incorporates an ideal acclimatization profile via the "climb high, sleep low" rule on Day 3 (ascending to Lava Tower at 4,600m before descending to Barranco Camp at 3,900m). Trekkers camp in three-person, three-season mountain tents supported by a dedicated crew of guides, porters, and mountain cooks. Day-by-Day Itinerary: Day 1: Machame Gate to Machame Camp Metrics: Distance: ~11 km | Hiking time: 5–7 hours | Elevation: 1,800 m to 2,835 m | Habitat: Montane Rainforest Activities: Morning transfer from Moshi or Arusha to Machame Gate for park registration and crew allocation. Trek along winding forest trails through towering trees and moss-draped canopy, keeping an eye out for black-and-white colobus monkeys. Arrive at Machame Camp at the forest fringe for dinner and overnight. Overnight Stay: Machame Camp (Mountain Tents) Meals Included: Packed Lunch & Hot Dinner Day 2: Machame Camp to Shira Camp Metrics: Distance: ~5 km | Hiking time: 4–6 hours | Elevation: 2,835 m to 3,750 m | Habitat: Moorland Activities: Ascend out of the forest glades onto a steep, rocky ridge covered in giant heather. Cross a river gorge and emerge onto the vast Shira Plateau, offering expansive views of Kibo Peak and the Western Breach glaciers. Overnight Stay: Shira Camp (Mountain Tents) Meals Included: Breakfast, Hot Lunch, & Hot Dinner Day 3: Shira Camp to Lava Tower to Barranco Camp Metrics: Distance: ~10 km | Hiking time: 6–8 hours | Elevation: 3,750 m to 4,600 m (Lava Tower) to 3,900 m (Barranco) | Habitat: Alpine Desert Activities: Trek eastward across a semi-desert landscape toward the towering volcanic outcrop of Lava Tower (4,600 m) for lunch. Descend through the Great Barranco Valley to Barranco Camp. This "climb high, sleep low" strategy is critical for body acclimatization. Overnight Stay: Barranco Camp (Mountain Tents) Meals Included: Breakfast, Hot Lunch, & Hot Dinner Day 4: Barranco Camp to Karanga Camp to Barafu Camp Metrics: Distance: ~13 km | Hiking time: 7–8 hours | Elevation: 3,900 m to 4,673 m | Habitat: Alpine Desert Activities: Begin the morning scrambling up the non-technical Great Barranco Wall. Cross the scree ridges and gullies of the Karanga Valley, continuing up to Barafu High Camp on Kibo’s windswept ridge. Early dinner and rest in preparation for the midnight summit push. Overnight Stay: Barafu Camp (Mountain Tents) Meals Included: Breakfast, Hot Lunch, & Hot Dinner Day 5: Barafu Camp to Uhuru Peak to Mweka Camp Metrics: Distance: ~5 km ascent / 12 km descent | Hiking time: 7–8 hours ascent / 4–6 hours descent | Elevation: 4,673 m to 5,895 m (Uhuru Peak) down to 3,100 m | Habitat: Arctic / Montane Forest Activities: Midnight wake-up call and warm tea before beginning the steep scree ascent toward Stella Point (5,745 m) on the crater rim. Continue along the snow-draped crater rim to Uhuru Peak (5,895 m)—the summit of Africa. Descend back to Barafu for short rest and lunch, then continue down to Mweka Camp in the upper forest belt. Overnight Stay: Mweka Camp (Mountain Tents) Meals Included: Breakfast, Hot Lunch, & Hot Dinner Day 6: Mweka Camp to Mweka Gate & Return Metrics: Distance: ~10 km | Hiking time: 3–4 hours | Elevation: 3,100 m to 1,640 m | Habitat: Montane Rainforest Activities: Final morning descent through lush rainforest down to Mweka Park Gate. Collect official Kilimanjaro National Park summit certificates (Green for Stella Point, Gold for Uhuru Peak). Say farewell to the mountain support crew and transfer back to Moshi or Arusha for hot showers. Overnight Stay: Trek ends with hotel drop-off in Moshi or Arusha Meals Included: Breakfast & Celebration Lunch
